Anatomy of a Branding

Here is what a typical small ranch branding consists of.

Branding is a necessity for any cattle rancher. Each brand is registered with the state, so if the rancher's cattle are lost or stolen, they can be identified if found.

Actually, there is more to it than just branding. The calves are examined for health or injuries, and they must be vaccinated against cattle diseases. Horns, if any, must be removed. And, little bull calves need to become little steer calves.

Lets take a look!

First, the cows need to be separated from the calves. Since we don't need to brand the cows, they are being turned out into the pasture. It's a very frantic time for the babies, they have never been away from mom before.

Okay, we have sorted out all the cows, but they are keeping a close watch on their babies from the other side of the fence.

The calves are then pushed into the run that leads to the chute.

Almost to the head of the line! Poles are placed behind each calf in the run to prevent it from backing out. There's no turning back now!

The calves are so little, sometimes it is necessary to get behind them in the run to push them forward...

...which isn't always so good for the blue jeans! It's always best to remember not to wear your best clothing if helping out at one of these.

The first calf is making his way to the chute.

The cowboys work the levers of the chute (aka "the squeeze") get ready to brand. One lever opens the rear door to allow the calf into the squeeze, one lever brings the sides together to hold the calf in place, and a third lever closes the front of the chute around the calf's neck so it cannot jump forward or back up.

The iron is hot and ready to go!

The calf's small horns are removed. If not, the horns will continue to grow, and the calf will be able to injure other cattle and people. After the horns are removed, the wounds are cauterized to stop any bleeding.

Calves are vaccinated and wormed so they will grow up to be fat, healthy steers and cows.

Little bull calves need to become little steer calves. (Children, ask your parents)

Ready to brand!! The calf's tail is pulled to the side to prevent as much moving as possible. If the calf moves, the brand will not be clear.

This little calf is all done, and found his way back to mom.
